OC MinistriesOperation Connection

Larry Shelton describes Operation Connection, one of our newest ministries.

I have been to Sierra Leone, West Africa many times.  When I went on my first mission trip, I became keenly aware that the education of Sierra Leone’s youth is critical to help Sierra Leone progress out of poverty.  Sierra Leone is currently one of the poorest countries in the world.

I discovered that many promising students were unable to continue their education beyond primary school because of the lack of money to support their education.  Many of these students had lost one or both of their parents in the recent civil war.  Also, because families tend to be large, many students ultimately have to drop out of school because of the inability to pay the tuition and fees for all family members.

For a typical high school student, $150 will cover most of the costs of tuition, books, uniform and shoes for a school year.  What is a small amount to us can make a tremendous difference in a person’s life in Sierra Leone!  When I returned on my second trip I decided to try to find a way to help many of these students.  It was my plan to connect students with needs to sponsors in the US.  This program has become known as “Operation Connection.”

If you would like to support a student’s education, please contact me.

Ideally, I hope to connect one student with one sponsor.  Most sponsors are giving $150.

Checks should be made out to “Lake Harriet United Methodist Church” as this program is being administered through them in the US.  Enter “Sierra Leone Scholarship” in the “for” space on your check.  This is a tax deductible item and you will receive a receipt for your donation.
